Rivermen name a captain… this time before the season starts!

Last year it took some time for a captain to be named, and in the end Cracknell was the guy. This year we know who will be wearing the “C” starting in game 1.

…Cracknell impressed me early last season, and I called for him to get the “C” before he was named. By the end of the season I was still firm in my convictions, but it seemed as if the room had gotten away from him and Bednar.

…Ford is a proven commodity, wearing the “C” in Milwaukee.

…glad Cracknell gets to wear the “A”

Rivermen Roster Reduced… Ramalamadingdong… Really.

Blogging from my phone on the road, but here is some news going into the regular season opener in Abbotsford:

Peoria Rivermen General Manager Kevin McDonald announced today that the club has assigned goaltender Paul Karpowich and forwards Brett Sonne Tyler Shattock and Cody Beach to the Rivermen ECHL affiliate, the Evansville IceMen.

Tyler Shelast, Jesse Perrin, Mike Glaicar and Jesse Durocher have been released from the professional tryout contracts (PTO). Shelast and Perrin are expected to report to Evansville while Glaicar is expected to join the Rapid City Rush (CHL).

Peoria’s roster now stands at 24 players comprised of 14 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.

More benefits of the NHL lockout: National Burke Broadcasting System

As the preseason rolls on, and here at HQ I get ready for spending another Rivermen season in the trenches comes this tidbit, a unintentional (but awesome) benefit of the NHL lockout:

The American Hockey League and the Peoria Rivermen announced today that regular-season AHL action will be heard live onSiriusXM NHL Network Radio, beginning with the opening night of the 2012-13 season on Oct. 12.

SiriusXM NHL Network Radio will carry AHL action on its main channel (Sirius 207XM 92) beginning with an action-packed opening weekend featuring eight AHL games, including an opening-night doubleheader featuring the Oklahoma City Barons and the Lake Erie Monsters, followed by the Rivermen taking on the Abbotsford Heat.

Peoria’s first three games (October 12 & 13 @ Abbotsford and October 17 @ Chicago) will all be carried throughout the United States and Canada. Rivermen radio voice Brendan Burke will have the call on Oct. 17 while the voice of the Abbotsford Heat Ryan Pinder will call the action during the opening weekend.

…the bold letters highlighting the Burke broadcast is my own addition, but warranted. This excellent exposure for the club and the hard working Brendan Burke. His call up to the Blues last year to fill in was a good reward, but calling the Rivermen to a nationwide, hockey starved, audience is just awesome.

…wonder if he’s nervous.

Who’s Ready For FREE STUFF?!?

Edit: Added in political bobbleheads photo.

The Rivermen announced today the promotional calendar for the 2012-2013 season. There look to be some fun items on here in addition to the fairly familiar things given away in years past.

Oct. 19, 2012 – Opening Night means a magnet schedule (5,000)

Oct. 27, 2012 – Team calendar

Nov. 3, 2012 – Presidential Bobblehead Giveaway Night.

The Rivermen will have 1,000 bobbleheads of both President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney that will be given away at different gates.  Fans can “cast their vote” by picking which gate they enter and which bobblehead they receive and the first candidate to run out will be declared the winner!

Nov. 10, 2012 – Hat giveaway night

Dec. 15, 2012 – Special jersey auction (design contest winner)

Jan. 19, 2013 – Zamboni bank giveaway

Jan. 26, 2013 – Ryan Reaves “bobblefist” giveaway

It’s a twist on the typical bobblehead where the head stays still while his fists move back-and-forth.

Feb. 16, 2013 – Kids jersey night (first 1,0000 kids 12 and younger)

Feb. 23, 2013 – Team poster giveaway

Mar. 17, 2013 – St. Patricks Day theme jerseys and auction

Mar. 23, 2013 – Kids hockey stick giveaway

Mar. 30, 2013 – FREE FOOD NIGHT (nomnomnom)

Apr. 6, 2013 – St. Louis Blues jersey and autcion

Also, fun on the run and Sunday skates are back:

After each Sunday game this year (except March 17 and April 21) fans can come down onto the ice and skate (please bring your own skates) and they will be joined by the entire Rivermen team Rivermen team following their games on Oct. 28, Dec. 2, 2013, Jan. 20, 2013 and March 24.

…anyone who knows me knows that I will be acquiring one of each of the political bobbleheads. I just can’t let something like that go.

…and a bobblefist? Yes, please.

…tell me what YOU are looking forward to the most in the comments!

Rivermen Sign Another Defensemen

From the Rivermen:

[Brent] Regner, 23, has spent the past two seasons with the AHL’s Springfield Falcons where he has developed into a playmaking defenseman.  Last year he led the Falcons defense with 29 assists and 31 points – both totals were career-highs. Over his three professional seasons, all of which have been played in the AHL, he has produced 70 points (12 goals, 58 assists) and 65 penalty minutes in 181 games.

Originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the fifth round (#137 overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Regner spent four seasons with the Western Hockey Leagues’ Vancouver Giants.  In his final amateur season, the 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman led all Giants defensemen in scoring with 67 points in 70 games to set a Giants team record for most points in a season by a defenseman. He was also part of the Giants 2007 Memorial Cup championship.

… a puck moving blueliner? I like it.

… why the hell wasn’t Woywitka sent down to start the year in Peoria? The Blues are in effect “protecting” him by not having him go through waivers and risk being claimed.  He’s projected to be in STL at season’s start… whenever that may be.

… it would take a big brass set for a GM to be poaching the waiver wires right now. Evidence being that not a single player has been claimed. Could you imagine the GM heads imploding if the waiver wire opened up to a free for all?

Blues Assign Players to Rivermen

Following suit with other NHL teams ahead of the lockout the Blues assign a bevy of players to the Rivermen:

  • G: Jake Allen
  • G:Paul Karpowich
  • G: Mike McKenna
  • D: Taylor Chorney
  • D: Ian Cole
  • D: Mark Cundari
  • D: Cade Fairchild
  • D: Scott Ford
  • D: Brett Ponich
  • D: David Shields
  • F: Jay Barriball
  • F:Cody Beach
  • F: Adam Cracknell
  • F: Stefan Della Rovere
  • F: Evgeny Grachev
  • F: Philip McRae
  • F: Andrew Murray
  • F: Anthony Nigro
  • F: Anthony Peluso
  • F: Jaden Schwartz
  • F:Tyler Shattock
  • F: Brett Sonne
  • F: Vladimir Tarasenko
  • F: Sebastian Vannstrom.

…not totally shocked to see Tarasenko and Schwartz on this move, but still very excited. One or both had the possibility to make the Blues roster at the start of the season, but with the lockout looming and not exactly looking like it is going to get solved, it will be nice for Rivermen fans to get a good look at the phenoms.

Random News and Notes

There was a winner picked in the jersey design contest! I’ll be honest, this was my second pick, but I still think that it is a very sharp design. Kudos to Ryan Malaschak for the winning design.

=====

From the “Banished to Alaska” file comes the news that the Alaska Aces have been… well…

The new ECHL organization for the St. Louis Blues is the Evansville Icemen located in Evansville, Indiana. This makes sense for the Blues as Alaska was a very long way to go when players needed to move between leagues. Evansville puts the ability to make the move from AHL to NHL easier because the ECHL call up is likely to be a lot more accessible for Peoria.

They are also the ECHL affiliate of CBJ and the Lake Erie Monsters. I hate sharing.

=====

Single game tickets for the Peoria Rivermen are on sale starting RIGHT NOW. You can stop by the Civic Center box office during normal business hours and grab seats for the games you want to see.

Also, knowing that not everyone can get downtown the Rivermen have tweeted out the online link:

=====

I am more and more resigning myself to the fact that an NHL lockout of some sort is all but unavoidable at this point. I cannot believe that the NHL and NHLPA could believe that cancelling a whole season is going to help the state of the game in any way, but I also know that there are massive divides on issues that separate the two sides and (barring a miracle) there will be game time lost in 2012-2013.

Former Rivermen Brett Sterling has put out a series of tweets with a players perspective that I think is worth a read:

The potential for a lockout also makes one wonder what kind of moves the Blues are going to make in the short term in the event there are games lost. Is it possible that we could see Schwartz or Tarasenko on an AHL roster until the NHL gets going? I would imagine that the Blues are going to want their young guns to get as much playing time as they can, and the AHL is a great place to do that in lieu of the NHL. Of course, this is all dependent on the contract stipulations and terms.

The Rivermen Blog HQ is getting geared up for another AHL season and I will start getting back into the posting/snarking routine as we go into Rivermen camp and the preseason.

It’s good to have something to write about again.

Grueling Preseason Marathon Announced.

For the preseason to 2012-2013 the Rivermen will play a total of three games:

  • Oct. 1 (7:05pm) Chicago @ Rivermen
  • Oct. 5 (7:00pm) Rivermen @ Chicago
  • Oct. 6 (7:05pm) Rockford @ Rivermen

All tickets to the two games in Peoria, upper and lower bowl, will be available for $10.  Full season ticket holders will again receive free tickets this year.

2012-2013 schedule is announced!

I know that the hockey world is waiting mostly on pins and needles to see if the NHL gets a Collective Head Out Of Its Butt Bargaining Agreement… but today a new gift arrived. The Rivermen announced the full season schedule.

Of particular note:

…we open with three road games.

…home opener is Oct. 19 vs. Rockford

…in December the Rivermen are on the road for ten games, home for only four.

…in February they are home for seven, on the road for three.

…Oct. 27-28 is the first pair of four home games against former Midwest Division foe Charlotte.

…we don’t see new Midwest Division member Grand Rapids until Nov. 24 at home.

…the last two games of the regular season will be at home against Charlotte and Milwaukee. I’m really hoping we’ve locked up a playoff spot by then. Charlotte was our guest at Carver Arena in the penultimate game last year, and we all know how that went.

The Rivermen are being coy… and it could mean _______? UPDATED

UPDATE 10:13am:

Rampant speculation didn’t last long.

From the Rivermen press release:

The Peoria Rivermen have announced that they will be holding a contest that will allow fans to design a jersey to be worn during the 2012-13 season. The contest, which is open to the general public, will reward the winning designer with a customized version of their jersey, public recognition, as well as four tickets to the game in which the jerseys will be worn.

“We know from talking to our fans that they have some really creative ideas for what they would like to see a Rivermen jersey look like,” said Rivermen Chief Operating Officer Jason Penning. “This gives us a new way to connect with our fans will give us a great new look for the night.”

These jerseys will be auctioned off after a yet-to-be-determined game during the 2012-13 season, with the proceeds to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Illinois.

Hockey fans with graphic design skills and a creative imagination are encouraged to submit their jersey design by emailing it tojerseycontest@rivermen.net. A complete list of rules can be found by clicking HERE.

Original post:

From the Rivermen twitter account:

Ok, sure, no problem. Contests are contests. But what does it all mean? Well, a hint was given to us from the Facebook account:

It is the first time it has been done in our AHL history and our fans will need to show their artistic abilities.

Now THAT is fantastically cryptic. I have no artistic abilities at all, so I am going to have to sit this one out. But what I can do is offer a forum for rampant speculation. So comment away, and let’s take a wild guess on what the contest is all about.

New logo? New tshirt design? New tattoo? I know! A mural they intend on painting on the side of the Civic Center!

NHL Free Agency: Day One (or Why Won’t You Love Me Tomorrow?)

Generally speaking the NHL free agency period is marked by one or two high profile players who are looking for a big pay day. Last year it was Mike Brad Richards (thanks for pointing out my stupidity Miriam!) who landed with NYR (as a confessed Rangers fan I was dubious about the signing, but I’m safe in saying that it worked out). This year all eyes are on Zach Parise, and to an extent Alexander Semin. Are the Blues going to get any of those guys? Probably not. But don’t get me wrong, it would be super cool if they did.

What the Blues did get on Day One were three guys who are likely to be seen in a Rivermen jersey to start the year.

Mike McKenna, goalie, comes over from Bighamton and will be a decent compliment to Jake Allen. Note I did not say that he would challenge Allen for the starters job in Peoria. I think that it is his to lose, and with Bishop gone to Ottawa this is a good signing by the Blues to give Allen some relief when he needs it.

His stat line isn’t horrible, and while I don’t think that he’s going to buck for the #1 job I really didn’t think Brian Eliott was going to challenge Halak in STL. So, until the puck drops in October and the games start to count I’m going to stand with my prediction, but (as my wife always says) I am simply waiting to be wrong.

Taylor Chorney, defense, was for a brief time last season a St. Louis Blue. He never saw the inside of Carver Arena, but allowed the Blues to fill a need at a time when it was better for Ian Cole to stay in Peoria and get in some extra work rather than go to STL and sit in the rafters.

Chorney, from what I can tell is a top flight AHL talent, and will challenge for an NHL spot if someone in camp falters or the injury bug takes a big whack at the parent club again. This is (at least on the first day of signings) a good move for the organization overall.

Scott Ford, defense, is an interesting signing. Why? Because he was a Milwaukee Freaking Admiral. And man, oh man, do I hate Milwaukee… well… at least I did in the early half of last season when they kicked the crap out of us every time we saw them. Toward the end of the season though, when the fourtunes had reversed, my hatred lessened to a general – yet complete – loathing.

But why should I hold that against Ford? I shouldn’t, and I won’t. Everything tells me that he is a leadership guy (after all he did wear the “C” in Milwaukee). He might be the right guy to bring into a locker room that (while I love Cracknell) seemed to slip away from our late-named captain last year. Leadership is an underrated quality by people who don’t understand the game of hockey. This is one of the true team sports, and you need a great leader to make a team fire on all cylinders. Last year I think Cracknell and Bednar had some trouble wrangling that room. Maybe Ford is the guy who can do it.

If you want to read a quick post from my friends at Admirals Roundtable (hate the team, love the bloggers) about the parting of the ways with Scott Ford click this blue string of words.

Changes.

The Rivermen get a new coach.

Dave Allison is going to be the bench boss for the Rivermen (sans Berehowski – congrats by the way – and Danny Brooks who is moving on to STL). Looking at his last stint in the AHL with Iowa I have to say that I am remarkably underwhelmed. Yes, he has an impressive list of players that he has helped develop, but his overall experience in the AHL was less than stellar.

The good news is this tidbit found in Eminian’s article:

“His teams have a reputation of playing hard whistle-to-whistle, and he can coach with whatever cards he’s dealt.”

We need a team that is known for that. Last season, ours wasn’t. I really hope that Allison works out, I would hate to see this team languish further. I know that pessimism doesn’t help at all, so I am reserving judgement until the season begins and then we shall see what happens. But it does seem that Blues GM Doug Armstrong is trying to put the band back together from his Dallas days.

Charlotte, we hardly knew ye.

Hey look kids, divisional realignment! The AHL Board of Governors (otherwise known as the whiz kids who cut the opening round of the playoffs to a best of 5) shuffled the deck again and made some changes… (from AHL)

Changes from last year’s alignment include Abbotsford moving to the North Division, Grand Rapids moving to the Midwest Division and Charlotte moving to the renamed South Division.

While we’ll see Charlotte again, at least they won’t be a divisional rival. I, for one, am glad. Coming in and mucking up the Midwest Division just once was enough for me, thank you.

Video Killed The Incomprehensible Idea That The Puck Didn’t Go In I Mean It Was RightthereunderthecrossbarandIsawitgoinwithmywontwoeyeshowcanyounotseethatwharrrbgggle.

From the AHL again:

The Board has approved the use of a video goal-review system for AHL games beginning with the 2012-13 season.

And there was much rejoicing.

The AHL changes the rules.

Last tidbit will make the game look different for at least a while.

• Rule 67.2 (“Handling the Puck”) now calls for a minor penalty “any time a player places his hand over the puck while it is on the ice in order to conceal it from or prevent an opponent from playing the puck”.

• Rule 76.4 (“Face-offs”) states that “both players facing off are prohibited from batting the puck with their hand in an attempt to win the face-off.” Violation of this rule will result in a minor penalty for delay of game.

• The Board has also approved a test of a variation on Rule 81 (“Icing”) at the request of the National Hockey League, that will, in the event of a potential icing violation, complete the play should a defending player be the first to reach the end zone face-off dots and provided the puck has crossed the goal line at that point. This rule will be in effect until Nov. 19, 2012, at which time its continued use will be determined by the Board. This was the only rules test approved.

Of particular note here is the new icing rule. I understand what they are doing here, and I am frankly okay with it. The purist in me wants to scream and gnash its teeth but it is just going to have to get used to change. This is a player safety issue.

Let me put it simply. If Milwaukee ices the puck (the puck having crossed the goal line) and the first guy back to the face off dots is a Rivermen player then the ref will blow the play dead, and icing is the call. However, if there is a tie, or Milwaukee is there first the play continues. I imagine in a close call the instructions are to err on the side of the Rivermen player so that both don’t go crashing into the boards and get horribly, terribly killed.

This is a GOOD thing.

New season, new dates to be excited about.

So, the home opener is October 19, 2012… a Friday.

The six dates we know that there will be hockey at Carver Arena are as follows:

The six guaranteed home dates are as follows:

  • Friday, October 19
  • Saturday, November 24
  • Saturday, December 15
  • Monday, December 31
  • Saturday, January 19
  • Saturday, January 26

The rest of the schedule will be out later this summer.

Brendan Burke, not just a voice for radio.

Burke has his own blog now, where he is expressing some thoughts beyond the 140 character limit he suffers with under Twitter. While he has only a couple of entries in right now it is worth a read, and I am sure will offer a lot of extra information that you might want to know.

Hell, he might even just run me right out of business, seems how he is the inside guy. Heh.

Bednar out as coach of the Peoria Rivermen – UPDATE

Here are some notes from Dave Eminian’s article behind the PAYWALL OF DESTINY:

Fairchild:

“Shocking,” said Rivermen defenseman and AHL All-Star Cade Fairchild, who also made his NHL debut with the Blues as a rookie. “I’m speechless. We didn’t expect this at all.”

Nesbitt:

Said 20-goal scorer and veteran Rivermen winger Derek Nesbitt, who is already signed for next season: “I am very surprised. It’s a wakeup call for a lot of players on our team. You have to play. “We underachieved as players and maybe Jared took the fall for it.

Bednar:

“We didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in my career as a head coach,” Bednar said. “The day we were eliminated was not a good day, did not feel good. Today does not feel good, either.

“Now I have to turn the page. I’m a coach. I love the competition. There aren’t a lot of jobs out there, but I want to get back to the bench as soon as possible.”

…when it comes down to it, I think Nesbitt got it. Bednar was the fall guy for a lackluster effort.

…they want the new coach in place going into the draft in 10 days so they can have the organization in place when they start getting turning the page and moving forward with some young talent that may see some time in Peoria when it is all said and done.

…speculation anyone? I’m holding out for Barry “the Mullet” Melrose. Or better, Darren “Milkcrate” Pang to make his coaching debut.

————ORIGINAL POST—————-

In some news that has finally broken me out of my “Oh-man-I-can’t-believe-the-way-that-season-became-a-total-cluster-at-the-end” funk it appears that the Rivermen are getting a new head coach.

From the press release:

Peoria Rivermen General Manager Kevin McDonald announced today that the St. Louis Blues have declined to exercise its option on head coach Jared Bednar for the 2012-13 season.

“I want to thank Jared for his dedication and passion for our organization and the game of hockey,” said McDonald. “He deserves tremendous credit for developing our young players over the past two seasons and we sincerely wish him the best in the future.”

…now I certainly am not celebrating that Bednar is out as head coach. I wouldn’t do that. But I think that this is the right move for the team going forward. Over the whole of the season my thoughts were that Bednar wasn’t the motivator that this team seems to have needed. Too many “closed door meetings” had to take place over the season, which is indicative of a coach just not getting his players to play. The boos raining down from Carver Arena stands during the last home game were (and I still hear it) criticism that the team was “uninspired”.

…who wants to see Berehowsky as the head coach?

…I would really like it if they stayed inside the organization. Berehowsky might be too green for an AHL team, but he could run Alaska well.

…paging Rob Murray? Nah…

All Is Right With The World

Series of tweets spell out the lack of “doom and gloom” some might have expected:

…when it is all said and done it looks like we’re in good shape for the last two games.

…that is assuming that the offense comes out from whatever rock it has been hiding under.

…worth noting that Peoria controls their own playoff destiny. If we have anyone to blame it is going to be ourselves.

Allen’s Time With The Blues Can Only Make Him Better… Unless It Makes Him Worse.

Nothing like hedging my bets, eh?

I really think that putting Allen in STL these last couple of days is a smart move by the organization as a whole. It costs the Rivermen  nothing since we don’t play until tomorrow night, and the benefits are immense. If Jake Allen is to be The Man for the Rivermen in the playoffs and beyond it is good to let him know what he is working for.

What specifically he’s working for, by the by, is this:

The only downside to Allen being in STL is if they get stupid and keep him too long, or they hurt him.

No way would I bet that he’s not between the pipes against Charlotte tomorrow.

Back after an exclusive three year tour of Europe, Scandinavia and the sub continent…

Oh, if only I were this cool.

Before I get to what I missed on my “tour” I need to say thanks to some folks in the comments section of the last post (as well as on Twitter). Unplanned gaps in coverage, as long time readers of the blog know, happen as occasionally the times here in HQ get hectic and the unpaid blogger hat has to occasionally get put in the closet.

In the comments section of the last post became fertile ground for talk and reaction to the games that I was not able to cover. So my thanks go out to the people in the world out there who took up the slack. You know who you are… and the rest of you could see who they are if you go click over to the comments section.

So… what did I miss?

Oh, look the Rivermen were on top of the division!

Then they lost five in a row, won three, lost one. Now they sit in seventh, with a magic number of six.

This means two things:

1) We can’t lose either of the two games we have left. Moreover because they are against two division opponents who want the points just as much as we do. Charlotte is on the outside looking in right now, but with a win tonight in Rockford they are only one point behind the Rivermen (and most of the Western Conference) going in to the game Friday here in Peoria.

2) Even if the Rivermen win out, we’re going to need help. We need the teams behind us to lose, preferably in regulation. They need to do it now. A Checkers loss in Rockford would go a long way in helping out, so if they could please get on making that happen that would be super. It isn’t often that the Rivermen fans would be cheering for Rockford.

The Friday game against Charlotte not only means a lot in reference to our playoff chances but it is the home regular season finale. This frightens me because it promises to be a big crowd, and this team does not do well in front of a big crowd. Knowing that the Checkers will be hungry to either leapfrog us (if they beat Rockford) or at the very least play spoiler, in combination with a big crowd, means that if the Rivermen bring even their A- game we might be in trouble.

If I’m looking for something I am looking for more offense. Please, for all that is good and right in the world, let the puck find the back of the net. In the last ten games we’ve averaged 2.1 goals per game. That is not going to cut it, no matter how well our goalies have been playing – and yes they have been playing well - especially when you are fighting for your playoff lives.

This is only going to make for a very tense final week.

Rivermen Fight For Division Lead TONIGHT

The Midwest Division is getting scary tight. Going into tonight’s action the Rivermen are currently third in the division behind Chicago and Charlotte. But something interesting has happened in the midst of the current three game winning streak.

1. Charlotte 72pts

2. Chicago    71pts

3. Rivermen 71pts

We seem to have caught up.

With Charlotte idle tonight the winner of the Chicago/Rivermen game will (at least until Friday) hold the top spot in the Midwest Division. As such, they will also occupy the #3 spot in the Western Conference standings, and home ice in the first round of the playoffs.

After tonight the Rivermen go to Charlotte for an important two game set.

If ever there was a time to keep a hot streak alive, it is now.

The Goalie Controversy That Never Was

So, for fun, I thought I would ask who you would start in Abbotsford after watching Allen get pulled in the last game against OKC. Allen came out, and Stalock came in, and put on a clinic which rallied the team and brought them back to win that game.

I also think that game did more for the psyche of the team. They realized that they can stand tall against anyone - anyone - and show them that the Rivermen are not to be steamrolled.

So, what do you do with your goaltender who was pulled on Wednesday in a game where the team in front of him was worthless and he was just fine? You start him in Abbostford in a must win series. I applaud Bednar for going right back to Allen. For Jake Allen I reserve the true kudos. He went into Abbotsford and only stood on his head AGAIN by stopping (wait for it) 71 of  72 shots over the weekend. 71 OF 72.

4-1 win on Friday where he stopped 39 of 40, and 5-0 on Sunday stopping all 32 shots he faced.

But while I am busy handing out the kudos let’s reserve some for O’Sullivan shall we? O’Sullivan who has only four games under the Rivermen banner, has managed to put up a meager EIGHT points (3g, 5a). Yeah, he doesn’t suck.*

What does this all mean?

MIDWEST DIVISION STANDINGS

1 Charlotte Checkers GP 60 W 32 L 20 OTL 3 SL 5 PTS 72

2 Chicago Wolves GP 61 W 33 L 23 OTL 2 SL 3 PTS 71

3 Peoria Rivermen GP 63 W 34 L 26 OTL 2 SL 1 PTS 71

Would you look at that, we’re in the hunt for the division lead. We also appear to be surging at just the right time. But why, oh why, and I excited about this week?

Wednesday @ Chicago

Tuesday 3/20 @ Charlotte

Wednesday 3/21 @ Charlotte

Bigger stretch of games this season? Nope.

*in case you care, Sterling in 4 games with Portland has put up 3 points (2g, 1a).
